I have a few old blogs that I let die out. I want to take the handwritten posts from them and use them on a brand new domain. Will Google penalize me for duplicate content, or does it not matter if the original site is offline now? I really don't want to rewrite 50 posts if I don't have to.

If the old site is completely deindexed, you can usually get away with it. But I'd still run it through a spinner or at least change the titles and the first paragraph. Better safe than sorry when it comes to the big G.
