I want to build a big portal site using WordPress instead of a custom script. The idea is to have multiple categories, aggregated feeds from my blogs, and a place to sell banner space. Has anyone here done a large scale portal with WP recently? I'm worried it might get too heavy on the database. Any tips on caching or specific themes that handle this well?

WP can handle a portal if you use a good caching plugin like WP Rocket or W3 Total Cache. The issue is usually with poorly coded themes that query the database 50 times just to load the header. Stick to lightweight themes and make sure you are running a decent server. Don't cheap out on shared hosting for a portal.

Exactly what ScreaM said. I ran a tube/portal hybrid on WP for a few years. The key was offloading the static files to a CDN. Once we did that, the database load dropped significantly. Also, avoid using those bloated mega-menus that load every category at once.
