I see a lot of newbies ask the same questions about getting started. I figured I'd write a quick guide to save everyone some time. This is just the bare basics to get a site online. Step 1: The Domain. Don't overthink this. Pick a .com if you can. Use Namecheap or GoDaddy. Don't buy a bunch of extra privacy add-ons unless you really need them. Just get the domain registered. If you plan on running adult content, make sure the registrar allows it. Step 2: Hosting. Do not use a free host for a serious project. You get what you pay for. Grab a cheap shared host to start if you are just running a simple blog. If you are running tubes or galleries, you need a VPS or a dedicated server. I recommend starting with a basic VPS from a company like DigitalOcean or Vultr. It's cheap and you have full control. Step 3: Pointing the domain. Once you have the hosting, go to your domain registrar and change the nameservers to the ones provided by your host. This can take up to 24 hours to propagate, so don't panic if your site doesn't show up immediately. Step 4: Install the script. If you are using WP, most hosts have a one-click installer in the control panel. If you are using a custom TGP script, upload the files via FTP and create a MySQL database. Follow the installation instructions exactly. That's pretty much it. Once your site is up, you can start focusing on content and traffic. Feel free to ask any questions below. |

This is really helpful, thanks. I'm stuck on the hosting part. You said VPS, but I have no idea how to manage a server without cPanel. Is it okay to start with shared hosting just to learn the ropes, or am I going to get kicked off for adult content?

A lot of shared hosts will suspend you if they find adult content, so you have to read their terms. If you want to learn, grab a managed VPS from a host that specifically allows adult. You get cPanel or a similar panel, and they handle the server updates. It costs a little more than a raw VPS but way less hassle.
