Why are small affiliates a problem?

So I got a cheque for just over $100 this morning. It's from a niche sponsor, and i guess I get about 3 per year from him. So neither of us is going to buy a Ferrari from this traffic, but I expect he's making a bit of profit from it. Reading some of the posts by sponsors, it seems that I'm a nuisance and should be dropped - why is this? I don't ask the sponsor to do anything other than run his paysites and send me the odd cheque (for which he charges me $2).

It's useful for me because I've got some of his pics and galleries on some minor domains, and I probably haven't looked at them for 2 or 3 years. This setup seems to work for both of us as far as I can see, so why do some sponsors say I should be dumped?

They are still $7.95 - and that's without any asterisks concealing extra charges.
