When I started I paid for my hosted site 4 months before I phad it up and running. There's many benefits in getting familiar with server side 'mechanics' while preparing site content when you first start out - if you can afford it, go with more personal control and spend on your own site. The worst that can happen is you go back to free, but with site-biz technical know-how.
