WOW. What a Christmas surprise/miracle
Alright, so I have to tell this story that just played out in my front yard.
I'm back home for the holidays, sitting in my room playing on the laptop and I hear my brother arrive home. My brother is a patrolman and he had just got done working a partial graveyard shift--- they made everyone work 6 hour shifts so no one would be stuck working the usual 12 hours shifts. Anyways, he comes in and then a couple minutes later I hear him run out of the house. I then hear some sirens coming down the road. I didn't think much of it because my brother is also a volunteer firefighter, which makes all that an usual occurrence. A few seconds later, I'm thinking "Damn, thats a lot of sirens" and I take a peak out the window to see a parade of blue lights going 100+ mph. Being my nosy self, I go outside to ask my brother what the deal was, assuming he still had his two-way radio on. I get outside, see the ditch of the side yard on fire and my brother pulling up to it on his truck. He parks in our parent's rental property house across the street and calls in the fire to the dispatch. I walk across the street to him and he tells me that the State Highway Patrolmen and County Sheriffs have been chasing this guy in a truck all night, already deployed the stop sticks on him, and the sparks from the rims caught the grass of the ditch on fire. Another guy, who we know, that lives across the street and saw the chase walks over too. We stand there waiting for a fire truck to get there (brother didn't have his fire gear on him), and the first volunteer fireman pulls up on his SUV and stops in the road. He only lives a quarter of a mile down the road in the direction that the chase came from and he's actually a good friend of the family. He rolls down his window and my brother starts telling him what happened. Then, we see another State Trooper coming around the soft curve in the road behind the SUV on one of the new Dodge Chargers and he was absolutely fucking flying. We're talking 120+ mph and we see him start to pull into the oncoming lane to pass. (He thinks the SUV has pulled over for him-- there was only emergency lights in the front windshield of the SUV, which he couldn't see) At the same time we see this, the fireman starts to pull into the driveway that my brother is parked in, which is to his left. Oh boy. My brother yells "Watch back." and the three of us standing there, with the ditch between us and the road, start scrambling to get the hell out of the way. I look back as I'm running and BOOM! The SUV's front driver corner collides with the Trooper's front, passenger side bumper. I whole-heartedly reply to the scene with, "OH SHIT!". The SUV goes about 50 feet and comes to rest in the ditch. The Trooper's car jumps the ditch, goes through 2 people's yard and the driver does everything he can to prevent the car from rolling. It ended up coming to rest about 250 ft down the road in someone's yard. Both cars had some pretty bad damage. My brother, who is also a certified "first responder", and the other guy's natural reaction was to start running to the SUV to check on the fireman. I shake off my natural reaction to stand there with my jaw on the ground and start calling 911, while running along. I'm pretty sure at this point, someone is either dead or seriously hurt but, miraculously, both drivers were able to step out of their cars and walk away with no serious injury. So, eventually the EMTs and the rest of the fire crew get there. They start blocking the road so they can clean up the debris and a woman pulls up. She starts walking through the road block real fast and a fireman says, "Mam, you can't go in there". She says, "It's my truck!". The fireman tells her that her truck isn't in there and that they're still chasing him. She, who looked like a crack head, says, "Well, hes not going to stop until I get to him. He's not going to stop." At this moment, the State Trooper that was in the wreck turns around and says, "Lady, we've got 20 guys on that son of a bitch. We're gonna stop him whether you're there or not." They did eventually wreck him, who turns out to be completely wasted, about 5 miles down the road. They then had to taze him, which resulted in him pissing his pants. (Idk if your Troopers are like this in your state, but here, if they have to risk their lives to catch you, you usually get an obligatory Maglite across your forehead. None of them are small guys either.) The clean up has finished and the trucks have all left now. The fire wasn't that big and was put out in a few minutes. Alright, so no one is going to read all of that great wall of text, but I had to tell it. I've T-boned a car going 60 mph before, but I've never seen an impact like that, much less stand that close to it. The SUV driver's wife was standing on her front porch after he left and actually heard the impact all the way at her house (which prompted her to rush the hell down to the scene). Thanks to some drunk pissed off at the world though, if the fireman would have started turning one second sooner, he definitely wouldn't have made it home made it home for Christmas and probably not the Trooper either. Both were extremely fucking lucky. So on that note, I gotta go get some sleep so Santa will come visit me. ![]() |
